parade, complete with a town fire truck on the
same street. We didn’t have a fire truck, but we
did have 20 neighborhood kids age 17 months
to 13 years joining in the fun on Live Oak Drive
with face painting, ice cream, and a “Best-of”
judging by Mayor Bill Blair. See most of the
group posed in front of neighbor Jim Mincher’s
house on page 52.

Hank Carter and his wife, Britt Scheinbaum, are
at home on the water, both for work and play.
Hank is chief mate of an articulated tug and
barge. Britt helps to ensure a clean, plentiful
supply as a water conflict specialist. And when
they’re at home, they love to kick off their shoes
and enjoy the water surrounding Wrightsville

22 Let Freedom Ring
July 4th is especially meaningful for members
of the Society of the Cincinnati. They are all
direct descendants of officers who fought
for America’s freedom. Nearly two and a
half centuries after its founding, the Society
continues to promote the ideals of independence.

28 Treasure Ship
A crew based out of Wrightsville Beach is
recovering silver, gold and artifacts from the
fabled steamer Pulaski, lying 40-something
miles off the North Carolina coast. The ship,
sometimes called “the Titanic of its time,”
was lost when a boiler explosion sent it to
the bottom of the ocean in July 1838.

The exterior and porch of the timeless
Dawson Leery house that served as a central
setting of the beloved TV show “Dawson’s
Creek” was not a set on a sound stage. It’s the
real life residence of Margaret Hummel and
her family. Dawson’s fans come from all over
the world — often unannounced — to visit
the picturesque home on Hewletts Creek.
