One member of our team calls the dialogue in selecting which photograph will grace our monthly cover during the final week, days and even minutes of magazine production, dizzying. It does not pay to get too personally attached to any one cover. Yesterday’s top cover choice may be today’s discard. No matter how out-standing they all are, only one can survive the final cut, even if hour by hour that changes, and changes back again, which is one reason we never promise anyone that a particular story will make the cover. We don’t know our-selves until often the very final moments before the issue goes to press. Chris Livengood, V. P. at Intracoastal Realty, wrote us asking why one of the fine homes sold in New Hanover County and featured in our annual real estate round up did not land the February cover that would grace the tops of 20,000 coffee tables and professional waiting rooms across the county and beyond. Yes Chris, we agree the article, its interviews, research and related graphs were top drawer, the best ever in 13 years. But, of the home photos we had, (and we had some outstanding ones to choose from) none could compare with the style, grace and beauty of classical pianist Elizabeth Loparits, one of Wilmington’s very own divas, photographed so beautifully by Allison Potter. Readers might have also favored the Sea inSpireD giFtS anD DecOr 10 WBM march 2014 fabulous photos Potter took of survivor Kim Smith and her horses, another story worthy to anchor the issue. For a while it did, but in the end, the nod went to Loparits at the grand piano. This month was no exception; we had off-the-chart photos of terrapins, owls and one fabulous little bluebird; we had valuable antique maps and the glorious story quilts of Hattie Schmidt. We put our whole hearts into what will be the finest choice for our readers. We hope you enjoy this magazine and all its thoughtful stories, without which there would be no photos — including Andy Wood’s terrapins and March’s terrapin cover shot by Potter a few weeks ago at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, one of our favorite places.
