wbm February 2011
on the cover
When we first met Leo, the social
director for Transplanted Garden and
the most handsome British Retriever
we’ve ever seen, we had one col-lective
thought: Put that boy on
the cover of the February issue. The
only question was whether Leo, an
excited and affectionate soul, would
pose like a model or play like a pup.
There was, naturally, only one pho-tographer
for the job: WBM direc-tor
of photography Allison Breiner
Potter. A dog owner and lover
herself, ABP arrived at Transplanted
Garden on a cold and overcast
Tuesday, January 26, with the idea
that Leo’s proud profile would fit
the bill. At 3:30 p.m., using a Nikon
D300 with an 18-70mm lens, Allison
caught Leo, who just then decided
the time was right to let everyone
know what we knew all along: The
cover is just where he belonged. —RL

This year, in our 8th annual People
and Their Pets, we pay homage to
our conscientious canine compan-ions
who hold down a job because
nobody says, “Welcome, we appreci-ate
your business” with as much hon-esty
and enthusiasm as a dog.

18 On the Waterfront
In the late 1970s, Airlie Road was
teeming with life. The Sea Bag, a
notorious fish house, was a hive of
activity for fishermen and sounders
who brought their catch to market.
Into this landscape a brotherhood
threw out its anchor. This is their
story, as told by Cordy Hieronymus,
about a band of native Kentuckians,
self-taught fishermen, whose name,
Hieronymus, became synonymous
with seafood.

22 Colonial Ghosts:
The Forgotten Tale of
Brunswick Town, Part I
Midway between Wilmington and
Southport on Route 133 there are
said to be ghosts at every turn. If
you could stand there long enough
and listen close enough, you’d hear
a story about a town that altered
the course of America not once,
but twice. You’d hear the story of
Brunswick Town. By Jason Frye

46 Savor: The Art of
the Cake
So incredible have wedding cakes
become that there are cable televi-sion
programs dedicated to the craft.
It’s not just baking for these decora-tors;
it’s art. We spoke to three local
wedding cake “artists” and asked
them to share their craft with us. The
results were spectacularly sweet.
