12 WBM letters to the editor Last month (“The Havoc of Hazel” by Cole Dittmer) we ran this photo with a cutline supplied by the photographer’s family. In “Hugh Morton’s North Carolina” we found the correct caption reprinted here: Julian Scheer, a reporter for the Charlotte News, wades through debris at Carolina Beach during the height of Hurricane Hazel, as a house burns in the background. This image won the late Hugh Morton first prize for spot news in the NC Press Photographers Association in 1954.
