It’s rust meets Villaggio De Batsone — the rambling Mediterranean home they designed and built for themselves, then sold, in Landfall’s Drayton Point. Rust, Mark Batson says, was the theme for their new look. While painted brick exteriors delineate the home’s old sections, raw core ten steel and painted aluminum roofing material used for soffits and overhangs herald the new. The idea, Batson says, is to create a maintenance-free façade. New steel columns support elevated walkways. Glass panels open exterior stairwells and deck rails to views of the home’s surroundings — marsh islands overlooking Kenan Creek to the south-east and the Intracoastal Waterway to the northwest. Top: The western elevation of the Batson residence on Pelican Drive features a core ten steel master suite with cantilevered balcony and porthole. Core ten fins define the fenestration in the master bath. Above: Ornate lions head door knockers belie many of the contemporary elements found at the Batson home. Opposite: The poured concrete slab is so green it purportedly scrubs carbon dioxide and converts it into oxygen. “It’s like a plant,” Mark Batson says.
