up front I am tickled pink to lead with a focus on living well. ersonally, 2013 was not my best year for taking care of me. I have big plans, like many of you, for a turn-around in 2014 and I know there is no better way to get started than to just go do it. See the high protein life style called the Paleo Diet on page 78 and helpful tips for exercising in cold weather on page 14. Exercising in the winter is all important to still be headed in the right direction come spring. The year for me was peppered with deaths and mourning, among them my good friend Brenda Matthews, founder of Reaching Hearts Ministry. I have Brenda to thank for the uptick in color in my life. The shock of losing Brenda without warning changed my style; I happily wear personal items of clothing and jewelry that my friend would have appreciated, some were even hers. Sometimes one story creates the interest in another and such was the case with the story of the Jo Ann Carter Harrelson Center. Attending the nonprofit organization’s second annual luncheon as a direct result of our feature on Bobby and Estell Harrelson’s Gentile Planation in November 2013, I immediately grasped the need to share with readers the remarkable story of this brick oddity plunked down in the center of Wilmington’s historic district. The more familiar I become with the center and the transformation of the former county lock up, the more I am certain it is the hand of God at work. The cells on the building’s empty top floors are foreboding. Each is shockingly small. Inside the cells on the men’s floor, I can touch my palms from wall to wall to calculate width, and come within inches of my “wing span” in measuring the length. It is disturbingly sobering. On the lower floors where transforma-tion is complete, where ten nonprofits are housed at below market rates, the feel is the polar opposite. There is plenty more outstanding reading in these pages including the stunning transformation of a Pelican Drive brick ranch into a modern glass and steel year-round-living dynamo. Publisher Pat Bradford at the Harrelson Center. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLISON POTTER. HAIR AND MAKEUP BY MATT MATYI, BANGZ HAIR SALON We have the story of South Harbor Island’s retired thoracic surgeon Dr. Ellis Tinsley Sr.’s medical journey. And we invited his commentary on the national healthcare debate as a counterpoint to our interview with journalist and best-selling author, T.R. Reid, who is the spear tip of the national healthcare issue. Plus, read about the Uwharrie Mountain race held each February. This not-for-everyone winter race up and down mountains is so popular, entry is won by lottery. It is perfect food for thought as we turn the corner into a brand new year.
