People magazine described him as “the kind of guy who could fix a rocket ship with two paper clips and a piece of twine … a genuine America hero.” Cherry eventually found out the true nature of the quest and his involvement grew beyond hosting the seaplane. Some secrets remained, though. “In the winter months they paid us to go out there and do reconnaissance to make sure no one was jump-ing their claim,” he says. “They didn’t give us the exact coordinates, but would give us the corners of a box.
