Up Front

2016-6

PHOTO BY ALLISON POTTER 15 As summer kicks into gear our June issue is, as always, packed with good reading and gorgeous photographs. In a nod to our fishing fathers, we share the special story of the once-great New Hanover Fishing Club, the biggest of its kind back in the day when life was a tad simpler and the fish were plentiful. Come explore the architecture of the riverfront Wilmington Convention Center with us. Often overlooked as the neighboring community college ramped up its own building campaigns, the city’s convention center is poised on the edge of the burgeoning north end, where growth is exploding. A marina abuts the center to the north. A band shell is ready for summer events, and two new restaurants are in the final stages of completion. A couple of hotels are coming, one almost ready for construction. PPD overlooks it all. Lying in the shadow of the Northeast Cape Fear River’s Isabel Holmes Bridge are the nearly completed Sawmill Point apartments.. We have a guide to understanding the plethora of historic markers in the county. From plaques attached to houses to shields atop roadside poles to signs along the river, they all tell the story of what happened on or near this spot in history. This issue is arty, with upcycled angels, fabric art, and the fine art of Phil Meade, whose paintings of Wrightsville Beach capture the nostalgia of a less-stressed beach strand. Don’t miss our feature on canning, freezing and drying food by multigenerational canner Emilee Gettle. As more and more locals are growing their own favorite veggies and fruit, it makes sense to put up some for later enjoyment once gardens and fruit patches are done for the season. Join me in getting my feet wet with this step-by-step primer and let me know how it goes. Have a blessed and fruitful June. upfront Editor/Publisher Publisher Pat Bradford pulling a Huck Finn.
