I get to bike, surf, climb. A succession of accidents: biking, surfing and hiking, left Jim’s shoulders dislocated, torn and in constant pain. Rotator cuff surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Orthopedic Hospital got him back – on the road, in the water, and on the trail. www.nhrmc.org Nationally Ranked. Several speakers were featured, including One Love Tennis founder and director Lenny Simpson and keynote speaker Johnnie Ashe, brother of tennis legend and humanitarian Arthur Ashe. Guests lunched on turkey and cheese croissants and tomato basil soup while viewing excerpts of the documentaries “Arthur and Johnnie,” the Ashe brothers’ story, and “ALTHEA,” about Althea Gibson, the trailblazing athlete who was the first African American to play and win at the U.S. Nationals and Wimbledon. Guests posed for photos in a mock wedding chapel while viewing Sands Hotel memorabilia. Music was provided by Frank Sinatra impersonator Michael Sonata and Wilmington cover band Jack Jack 180. The full year of plan-ning and preparation for the gala was completed by volunteers so 100 percent of the proceeds raised may be returned to the community in the foundation’s grants.
