In describing his childhood as a slave in Maryland, Frederick Douglass wrote about eating boiled corn meal mush from a trough set on the ground in his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. “The children were then called, like so many pigs, and like so many pigs they would come and devour the mush; some with oyster-shells, oth-ers with pieces of shingle, some with naked hands, and none with spoons,” Douglass recalled. “He that ate fast-est got most; he that was strongest secured the best place; and few left the trough satisfied.” Slaves at Poplar Grove appear to have been given ample food, Greene says, although frequent illnesses may point to nutritional deficiencies. In addition to rations, slaves on the plantation also grew some of their own food and fished in the sound.
