Plantation Cake RECIPE COURTESY OF POPLAR GROVE PLANTATION This Southern Antebellum-era recipe is a favorite of Poplar Grove Plantation executive director Caroline Lewis, who likes to serve it with fresh fruit. It is a dense and moist dessert, much like pound cake. “While it’s baking do not open and close the oven,” Lewis cautions, “or it will fall.” INGREDIENTS 2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 2 tsp baking powder 2/3 cup milk 1/2 pound butter 2 eggs PREPARATION Mix all ingredients together and pour into a greased 9-inch by 13-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes on a wire rack, then invert cake onto the wire rack and allow to cool completely. 89 www.wrightsvillebeachmagazine.com WBM
