At the Temple of Israel, Charles Woodward plays an instrument manufactured by Henry Pilcher’s Sons in 1906, making it the oldest pipe organ in Wilmington. The Jewish Reform movement in the 19th century introduced organ music into synagogues. Some Conservative congregations recently have begun to use musical instruments, but they are banned by the Orthodox. “The Jewish have their own hymns,” Woodward says. “The music is different and the words are different. Their hymns are in Hebrew.” 54 WBM december 2015
