The kitchen office was the true heart of the home, responsible for producing meals on its large open-hearth fireplace, and menu planning for the residents, staff, and palace parties. Note the small warmer to the left of the fireplace — the perfect place to keep bread warm until dinnertime. While it may not look like much by today’s standards, it was considered one of the state’s most modern kitchens when originally completed. Reenactors demonstrate daily tasks that would have taken place in the kitchen, like churning butter. 28 WBM december 2015
