Some paintings were featured in Southport’s Art Newton, by Tommy Harrelson, others have never been shown. All are held in private collections. In addition to the two-dimensional pieces, Newton’s niece, Juli Newton Ghiselin, will display some of the artist’s artifacts. Art Newton was a prolific photojournalist and painter of Southport’s iconic genre scenes during the last mid-century period. The visitors center is located in the historic Fort Johnston Museum, 203 East Bay Street. This photograph of Art Newton painting en plein air at the old Oak Island drawbridge was probably taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
