et me begin by saying I took our magazine’s advice over the holidays and at the urging of my son, began the high- protein, meat-loving Paleo diet (WBM January 2014) which for me is also sugar and gluten-free. The increase in my metabolism and overall health was pretty rapid. Now all I have to do is start walking the Loop again. This issue also has its share of life-changing stories. First, there is the story of survival and full recovery of Kim Smith, who battled breast cancer twice, plus congestive heart failure. Her recovery was tenuous until someone suggested she turn to horses as therapy. Meeting a horse named Moses changed her life and helped bring her back to health. It is a wonderful story expertly captured by Allison Potter’s photography. Our cover story is the tale of three world-class divas who call Wilmington home. Elizabeth Loparits, our cover model, Nancy King and Barbara McKenzie share their passion for teaching and performing classical music with us. Then, the look back at the year in real estate tells me not only were there some very good sales in the county and at the beach towns, but the value of my own home is returning. The tens of thou-sands of those who enjoy the trickle-down economy of a robust real estate market are in the best place they have been in many years. But that is only the tip of the iceberg. In this issue you’ll find the legend of the 150-year-old blockade-runner the Fanny and Jenny, which lays below the water off Wrightsville’s south end and the intriguing story of a gold ceremonial sword intended for Robert E. Lee 10 WBM february 2014 himself. The sword disappeared the day the ship ran aground, the captain drowned and the ship was burned. You’ll also find the art of Southport’s commercially trained Art Newton — his watercolors, pen and ink and pencil draw-ings — whose career spanned the 1940s, until his untimely death in 1964. Publisher Pat Bradford at the 1910 Star of the Sea Hospital. It is February and how could we leave out my favorite food group — chocolate. My personal favorite is a silky smooth dark chocolate gourmet truffle. You’ll find a timely selection of these delectables photographed for our pages this month. This is an exciting magazine with a good deal of variety; we are quite charmed by it. Share a smile and a sweet, preferably chocolate, with someone this month.
