The greater Wilmington area has celebrated Christmas in its own unique way over the years, from a holiday dinner of flounder stuffed with oysters and crab to decorating a massive oak tree on the north side of the city with more than 750 lights. The tree in the old Hilton Park on the banks of the Cape Fear River was retired in 2012 and uprooted three years later. Many homes were decorated with longleaf pines or cedar trees. Thankfully, toy drives, musical events, and pageants still flourish.

This year we look back on traditions past as we set new traditions for the future.
