O n the 60th anniversary of Hazel this month, we speak to two women, Marie Ashworth and Millie Knowles whose families lived through the category 4 storm back in the days when little warning of an approaching storm was available. Both were just girls that morning in October 1954, but the memories of their escapes from the storm are still sharp. Watching 8 mm footage, shot shortly after the storm by the late Charlie Boney, at the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History visibly upset Millie. Our cover is from Pam and Ray Sharpe’s traffic-stopping New England Shingle Style home on Wrightsville’s Lollipop Bay. The couple sat on the house plans and the lot near the end of Parmele Boulevard, with its sweeping water views from the front and back, for more than ten years. The house was completed in 2013. This month, the Sharpes host the wedding festivities of their son, Ricky to fianceé Elizabeth Sutton. You’ll also find a charming 2,400-square foot pied-à-terre originally built as a retirement houseboat that later became a treehouse. An extensive remodel undertaken in 2013 was completed this year, creating the wonderful home you see in our pages. Come along with us as we play 20 questions with former state senator Frank Block, the son of the founder of the Block Shirt Factory in Wilmington, and Hannah Block, whose marvelous good deeds are immortalized at the city’s 322 Causeway Drive, Unit 902 Seapath Towers Amazing views of Seapath Marina and water activities.
