2010 New Hanover County Athletic Event Calendar

Theres no shortage of sportage here in New Hanover County. Marathons, biathlons, triathlons and tournaments for golf, tennis, rugby, running, surfing, softball and more fill the year from end to end. Because there is such a large number, putting them all in one place at the same time was an athletic event unto itself undertaken by Hannah Wethington, who pressed on to the finish line so we could present: WBMs Athletic Calendar for 2010 (beginning in March, of course).


RUNS
Cardinal Strut 5K and 1.2 Mile Kids Marathon

Date: Saturday, March 6
Time: 8 a.m for the 5K; 9 a.m for the Kids Marathon and 1.2 mile Fun Run

WRRC River to Sea Road Race

About: Race starts at the CFCC parking lot on Water St. near the Hilton in downtown Wilmington and finishes in the public parking lot north of the Holiday Inn Sunspree on Lumina Ave in Wrightsville Beach. You run your own course. You time your own race.
The distance should be approx. 10 miles. Collected canned goods will be distributed to local food pantries.

6th Annual Steve Haydu St. Patricks Day Lotiderun

About: All proceeds from donations, sponsors and race entry fees are donated to selected local recipients who are fighting cancer and have no insurance. The race has grown to include nearly 1400 runners, and last year $35,000 was raised and distributed to 5 recipients in dire need of financial assistance.

2nd Annual Hustle for the Hungry 5K

About: The inaugural Quintiles Marathon at Wrightsville Beach, presented by Landfall Realty, will be an historic event for those who participate. On Sunday, March 21, thousands of runners will begin their marathon quest from Wrightsville Beach. Each runner will enjoy the scenic coastal views during their journey. They will wind through Landfall, for much of the course, and finish in Mayfaire Town Center.

About: Thousands of fans from across the state, region and country are expected to attend the 72-hole competition. Seventy-two teams will compete at three regional events for the right to advance to the national championships in Wilmington. The national championships will feature 24 teams and six individuals. The top eight teams in each region and two individuals not on the qualifying teams will compete in the NCAA finals. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of championship competition. In the team competition, the four low scores for each team will count in each days score.

Life Rolls On They Will Surf Again (TWSA)

Location: Beach Strand at access 4 (L-shaped parking lot)
About: TWSA utilizes a surfing experience to push the boundary of possibility for those with spinal cord injuries. Its not all about the surfing, its about showing that anything is possible! Individuals with SCIs from around the country gather together for a day of surfing, inspiration and camaraderie. Some have not surfed since their injury, some have never surfed, some surf all the time despite their varying mobility. TWSA pairs roughly seven volunteers with each surfer, for a day of excitement, joy and, best of all, surf! Safety precautions and experienced watermen (and women), along with lifeguards are always present. No prior surfing experience is necessary.
